Trained Volunteers are required to participate in a screening and orientation process (as outlined below).
- If you are interested in becoming a trained Volunteer and able to provide four (4) hours per week, please complete a Volunteer Inquiry Form (see link below). This provides us with your basic contact information and an idea of what volunteer opportunities you may be interested in.
- A Volunteer Application Packet will be forwarded to you. This packet includes information about our program, position descriptions, reference forms, etc.
- Upon receipt of the completed application packet, an Avow Hospice Volunteer Coordinator will process the information, follow-up with references and initiate a criminal and DMV background check. This process takes approximately 1-2 weeks.
- Once references, background checks, etc. are complete and you are approved for participation in the Volunteer program, you will be notified of the next orientation date. (Volunteer Orientation is scheduled bi-monthly and completed in one day from 8:30am – 4pm.)
- When your Volunteer Orientation date is confirmed, you will receive a Self-Study Volunteer Module and post-test. This will provide you with detailed training information about our organization, its policies and procedures, Volunteer best practices, etc. The post-test must be completed and returned to us prior to your scheduled orientation date.
- Mandatory drug screening is required for all trained Volunteers and is performed free of charge at a local lab.
- TB screening is done by completing a TB Survey Form and is required only for Patient/Family and PAWS Volunteers.
The application and training process for becoming a trained Volunteer is rigorous, but we hope you will appreciate the commitment we’ve made to our patients, families and Volunteers to ensure everyone feels comfortable, informed and happy with their assignments.
