Debunking the myth…
The unfortunate myth about hospice care is that it’s for people in the last days of their lives. The reality is that hospice care can actually help people live longer, in many cases. Hospice care brings significant comfort, peace and dignity to patients who are fearful, vulnerable, confused or exhausted from curative medical treatments that are no longer effective at stopping the progress of their illness.
Timely referrals are important…
The specially trained clinicians and counselors at Avow Hospice are experts in helping patients and their families come to terms with and prepare for life’s final journey. In order for patients and their loved ones to take full advantage of all the benefits and special services that Avow offers including complementary therapies, volunteer respite and grief and bereavement support, timely referrals are crucial. To submit an on-line referral use our "Healthcare Referral Form" now.
Our treatment philosophy…
All hospices, including Avow Hospice, subscribe to the philosophy that death is a natural occurrence that should be neither hastened nor prevented by treatment. As a result, hospices provide only comfort care, not treatments that are intended to extend patients’ lives or cure their illness.
Sometimes patients ask us to provide and pay for a drug or treatment that our Medical Director determines will actively treat their disease or prevent their death from occurring in its natural time. State and federal hospice laws, as well as spirit of the hospice philosophy, prevent us from providing such drugs or treatments.
Patients always have the option of paying for such drugs or treatments on their own if they want them.
Avow Hospice provides, without charge to the patient, medicines and other types of comfort care designed to relieve pain and provide spiritual, emotional, social and family support.
